Daily Update

August 7th 2008: Ah the joys of analog. Even though I've been listening to these same two albums for days now the fullness and richness of the transfer is amazing to me. I literally have never heard anything like this in my life. Transferring a vinyl to cd has been a true joy and I am so glad that I turned this hobby into a business. I honestly can't wait to get through to some of the records that are waiting in the queue line so that I can hear them, not only on the record but also when they are transferred. I feel I've been lucky so far in that my customers have wanted DVD-A transfers, nothing less. Believe me I am more than happy to give them that!

August 6th, 2008 (2nd Update): It is amazing the intricacies that one can hear when you record a vinyl to cd. Things that don't appear in the studio released CD version all of a sudden appear in the version recorded from vinyl. It is amazing to me how much the digitization process can destroy a sound file, simply because it cannot take enough "snapshots" of the analog wave. That analog wave will never be able to be fully recreated by a digital medium simply because the analog wave is produced by mechanical means and not the reduction of data into bit depths and 1's and 0's.

August 6th, 2008: I hope everyone is having a good day. I have isolated what sounded like turntable rumble in the mix but was happening at too high of a frequency to be turntable rumble. In my transfer of the Michael Jackson vinyl to CD I found strange frequencies in the 200 to 375hz range. I tried eliminating it with a notch filter but it only did so much. I eventually came to the conclusion that it was enhanced bass artifacts and there was little to be done. It amazes me also how high the frequencies on a turntable go, on some of these songs the spectral display is showing frequencies in the upper 40,000hz!

August 5th, 2008 (2nd Update): This transfer business is so much fun to me and at the same time I cannot believe that I haven't been doing it all along. There are so many unique challenges that arise when a person is transferring any vinyl to cd. Manually declicking, depopping, and denoising a file is probably one of the most time consuming and yet rewarding activites for me in this whole process. I cannot deny though that the ultimate payoff comes when I pop in a DVD-A that I created into a car or home stereo and here for intents and purposes an analog music file. Its just astounding.

August 5th, 2008 - I just wanted to drop everyone a line and let you know how my transfers are coming along. I have already recorded Journey - Escape and Michael Jackson - Thriller to the computer. The resolution I used was actually 32 bit depth and 192khz. Let me say that it sounds amazing!

I have had a little trouble in that I detected turntable rumble but I have located the frequencies at which they seem to occur. Only when those frequencies are amplified do I notice the problem but it is a good thing I did. I do not know what this customer's sound system is like or on what kind of equipment these transfers will be played on. I try to EQ as neutral as possible.

Right now I am working on the B-side of Thriller, with the A-side of Thriller and both sides of Escape left to post-recording processing. Have a great day and we will see you here later!
